Can We Reforest Even with Climate Change?

The Southern California wildfires of 2017 devastated over 110,000 acres of land, including residential areas and forests. In Australia, 2019-2020 saw bushfires leading to the death of multiple people. In other parts of the world, forest fires could also be happening, and together they all point to one thing: climate change needs immediate action.

Sounding the Alarms on Global Warming

Global warming is a phenomenon that can be felt by everyone. It is part of the effects of climate change. How does climate change affect forests, you ask? The flora and fauna that used to survive in a particular forest may have a hard time surviving given the higher temperatures. And, when instantaneous wildfires occur, it results in the destruction of their home. This results not just in the destruction of the immediate environment, but also the gases in the environment being trapped and adding more to global warming. It’s a vicious cycle.

Reforesting: Is It Helpful?

Reforesting can help rehome the animals that have survived and have been misplaced by forest fires. By giving back their home, we help them survive in the years to come. Reforesting also helps cool the environment, thanks to the natural process called photosynthesis. Plants’ ability to absorb carbon dioxide and return clean oxygen to the environment helps reduce the harmful gases in the atmosphere.

With this said, it’s important that we plant more than is destroyed. Trees take a long time to grow. Should there be a need to cut down one tree, perhaps for safety reasons, there should be other trees being planted in its place. That is the only way reforestation can benefit us and future generations.

The planet deserves a second chance at survival. Make every effort to help with reforestation efforts, so that we can see our forests thriving again in the future.
